About a month ago, one of my oldest and dearest friends, Nedra, sent me sent me a text. It said “Please come down for this!!!!!” Attached was this screen shot:

I had been trying to get to Los Angeles for several months, but health issues had prevented me from doing so. I was “off” that day at work. So… I promised I would go.
The only trouble with that promise was that the week before I was going to be in San Diego. The week after, I was heading to Oregon. Going to Los Angeles in between all of that would pretty crazy. But what the heck? I hadn’t seen Nedra in ages.
I got the time off and headed down. She had to work that evening, but we made plans to meet at the bar afterwards. The bar, Scum and Villainy Cantina, was in Hollywood, right on Hollywood Boulevard. It is a self-described “geek” bar. It caters to fans of things like STAR WARS, STAR TREK, GAME OF THRONES, superheroes, gaming, etc. It also apparently appealed to horror film fans, based on the mug choices for sale at the event posted in an updated photo I came across before event. The mugs featured were of Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Pinhead, Dracula, Beetlejuice, and Frankenstein’s monster.

I still had no idea of what to expect. Was this a tiki bar or just a tiki event for Halloween? I had never been there before and neither had Nedra. I arrived at the bar before she did and went in.

There was a small anti-room with additional seating just before entering the bar area.

It was a Tuesday evening and I was hoping the event would not be so well attended, but it was crazy crowded inside.

Nedra texted she was parking and on her way, while I waited in line. I sent her a text photo of the drink list so I could order for her.

Nedra walked in just as it was my turn to order. I opted for the Camp Mama. She went with the Boogeyman’s Grog. I was really hoping to score one of the FRIDAY THE 13TH Jason tiki mugs, but as I had stood in line, I saw the last of them (as well as the Michael Myers HALLOWEEN mugs) be snatched up.

I decided to go with the HELLRAISER Pinhead mug. Nedra went classic with a FRANKENSTEIN’s monster mug. We ordered some burgers to go with our drinks and our table number was, appropriately enough, 13.

When it was time to go back for a second round, I got to pay attention to some of the Halloween decor inside.

There was a long, mysterious corridor that went off to some god-foresaken place I could only imagine (the bathrooms?) at the far end of the bar.

While in line, I noticed a guy (donning a string of lights) wearing the same, exact Spooky Tiki shirt from Creepy Co that I was wearing.

At the bar, while the bartender did his thang, I spotted the cocktail recipes and quickly snapped a picture.

Mmm… They were mighty tasty.
Wandering back through the crowd, I saw that some people, like this guy, came in fantastic costumes:

Finally, after round two, it was time to leave. As I made my way to the bar again, I noted that the only mugs left were of the classic horrors—DRACULA and FRANKENSTEIN’s monster.

It had been a fun night, Although it hadn’t been in a tiki bar and the mugs were not special to the bar–they were from Geeki Tikis (of course. That totally fits the theme of the bar), which I was trilled to discover because that meant I could go back and order the mugs I wanted–we had had a swell time and it was so great to see and re-connect with Nedra once again.
The Scum and Villainy Cantina had been fun. Would I be back? Who knows. But Spooky Tiki Night was certainly a night to remember.

And I am super thrilled with my momento from the evening:

Nedra dug hers as well. She sent me this spooky tiki text photo not long afterwards:

Mark! You found this blog, too. Ha! Yes, the Universal mugs are nice, but I went back later and scored myself a Jason and a Michael Myers to go with my Pinhead. CHEERS!
